· Contestants must bring a one-page, typewritten resume and business card to the contestant orientation meeting. A penalty of 5 points will be assessed for failure to submit the required items.
Contestants must bring their supplies/products (all brands acceptable), implements, and an electrical power strip.
Contestants will need three (3) mannequins.
Two mannequins (one male and one female) will be ordered by the State SkillsUSA Office and delivered to the contest site. Contestants must use these mannequins. An invoice will be sent to your school for the Cosmetology fee ($100 per contestant); however, the invoice must be paid by March 15, 2008. If the contestant drops out of competition after being fully qualified, the Cosmetology Fee must still be paid.
One mannequin and stand must be supplied by the contestant for the Long Hair Design. The contestant may apply color or highlight to the mannequin prior to arrival at the contest site. The hair color is optional and is not scored since it is not done at the contest site.

Contestants will demonstrate their ability to perform jobs or skills as determined by the Alabama SkillsUSA Championship contest committee.
1. Long Hair Design
Contestant will be asked to create a long hair design in an upswept (all hair) position of their choice.
· All styling must be done at contest site. Points will be deducted for any pre-set or pre-curled mannequin
· Any technique may be used (such as braiding, twisting, rolls, loops, etc.).
· Create a design that is clean, smooth, showing no back combing, and back brushing under the finished style (check that hair pins, bobbie pins, and bands are not exposed).
· No ornaments, hair pieces, or color spray allowed.
· Curling irons/hot rollers may be used during the comb-out.
· Contestants may apply makeup to the mannequin at the contest site during the time allotted for that segment of the contest. No extra time will be allowed. Make up application is optional—it is NOT judged.
· Earrings ONLY may be added once hair design is completed provided it is done within the time frame allowed.
2. Women’s Cut and Design
Contestant must be able to duplicate a uniform layer (90 degree) haircut and design that has been selected by the state contest committee. See Milady Textbook for 90 degree procedures.
· Cut will be checked prior to styling.
· Style will be scored as a completed design.
· Hair must be styled with hair dryer and fingers ONLY.
· Contestants may apply makeup to the mannequin at the contest site during the time allotted for that segment of the contest. No extra time will be allowed. Make up application is optional—it is NOT judged.
· Earrings only may be added once hair design is completed provided it is done within the time frame allowed.
3. Women’s Short Cut & Style
Contestant must be able to duplicate the predetermined haircut and style that has been selected by the state contest committee using the electrical and styling tools of choice.
· The use of the razor and flat iron will be encouraged.
· Cut and style will be scored as a completed design.
· The mannequin used for the Women’s Cut and Design will also be used for this cut.
4. Men’s Cut and Design
Contestant must be able to duplicate the predetermined haircut and style that has been selected by the state technical committee.
· Cut and style will be scored as a completed design.
5. Communication Skills
Contestant must respond to oral questions demonstrating telephone skills, scheduling appointments, professional product recommendation, etc.
· 100 possible points
There will be a parade of contestants with their hairstyles after the judges have completed the scoring. Pictures can be taken at that time.

Any combination of tools - clippers, clipper guards, shears, thinning shears, and razors may be used.

Mid Length Male Cut Design (45 Minutes)
Contestant must be able to duplicate a predetermined haircut and style that has been selected by the state contest committee.
Cut and style will be scored as a completed design.
Any combination of tools - clippers, clipper guards, shears, thinning shears, razors may be used.
Finished look styling aids may be used.
3. Short Cut – FLAT TOP (45 Minutes)
Contestant must be able to duplicate a predetermined haircut and style that has been selected by the state contest committee.
· MUST USE CLIPPERS – (guides and clipper combs optional)
Time Frame: 2 Minutes or less
Purpose: To increase professional communication skills for new salon stylists.
Situation: A “new” customer calls your salon for “A Hair Cut Appointment”.
Directions: Contestant will answer mock phone call and simulate booking the
appointment over the phone.
Points: 100 total
