OUTSTANDING STUDENT

GUIDELINES

 

 

PURPOSE

To evaluate and recognize each contestant’s outstanding performance and achievements in the areas of scholarship, leadership, citizenship and professional development.

 

CLOTHING REQUIREMENT

SkillsUSA blazer, and accompanying official dress.  For information about purchasing, refer to the clothing requirements on pages 9-12 in the general regulations of the SkillsUSA Championships Technical Standards.

 

ELIGIBILITY

Open to active Alabama SkillsUSA members (Secondary and Post-Secondary).

 

OBSERVER RULE

No observers will be permitted to view the contest.

 

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS

1.      Supplied by the Alabama SkillsUSA Championships Technical Committee:

a.       All necessary information and furnishings for judges and technical committee.

 

SCOPE OF THE CONTEST

1.      The contest will consist of an evaluation of the student’s participation and achievements in areas represented in the Mr./Ms. SkillsUSA entry.

2.      The Mr./Ms. SkillsUSA standards documentation will:

a.       Contain verification:  A letter signed by the local school administrator certifying that all information contained in the notebook is true and correct.  The letter will be the first page of the notebook.

b.      Contain no more than 25 sheets of paper the size of the official notebook (may be contained in plastic sheet covers).  Both surfaces of the 25 sheets may be filled for a maximum of 50 surfaces.  Penalty:  Five points per surface (10 points per sheet of paper) will be deducted for exceeding these maximums.

c.       Be in an official SkillsUSA-VICA notebook (1” 3-ring binder) from the SkillsUSA Supply Service catalog.  No extraneous decorations will be allowed  (10 point penalty).

3.      The notebook must be organized by standards in the same sequence as the rating sheet.  Penalty:  Ten points will be deducted for each element that is out of sequence.

4.      Points will be awarded based on the following standards:

a.       Scholarship (0-30)

b.      The 30 points maximum is based on the final grades of the first and second semesters/terms of the last school year and the first semester/term of the current school year.


 

1.      A transcript of all grades earned during these semesters/terms must be signed by the administrator and be contained in the notebook.  If your school will not allow a transcript, the grades may be submitted on a school letterhead, and verified by the administrator.

2.      The judging committee shall judge on final grades earned in English and Math only in each of the three preceding semesters/terms (maximum 3 grades per subject).

3.      Career/technical education grades will not be judged in the scholarship standard.

4.      Points will be earned as follows:

A = 5 points       D =   1 point

B = 3 points       F = -10 points

C = 2 points

b.      Leadership (0-50)

1.      The 50 point maximum is based on the following criteria:

a.       Active SkillsUSA member on or before November 15.  Submit a copy of SkillsUSA Form 10 (Membership Roster).  (10 points maximum)

b.      Ability to assume responsibility based on election to school offices, i.e. president, vice-president, etc.

1.      Contestant must have completed a full term of office in a student organization, student council, major classes (freshman, sophomore, etc).  Homeroom offices are not acceptable.

2.      Offices held during the years in which student was in the 9th through the second year of technical college may be counted.  Allow 2 points for each office held (maximum 5 offices).

3.      A letter from each student organization advisor verifying office held must be submitted.

c.       SkillsUSA Offices Held – Allow the following points for SkillsUSA offices held:  Local--5 points; State--10 points; National--15 points.  (Maximum 30 points)

2.      A recommendation from the administrator of the school concerning the contestant’s character, reputation, and enthusiasm must be attached.  (10 points maximum)

c.       Chapter Participation (0-75)

1.      The 75 point maximum is based on the following criteria:

a.       First semester/term chapter meeting attendance record.  (Submit copy of actual attendance record sheet)

100% attendance              10 points

  85% attendance                7 points

  75% attendance                5 points

b.      Leadership Training:  Contestant attended leadership training for officers and members during the current school year.  (10 points maximum) (5 points for each conference)

c.       Local Contest Participation (Secondary) (Postsecondary)

One skill contest or one leadership contest plus:  Job Information Manual, Occupational Safety, Outstanding Chapter (can not use Mr. or Ms. SkillsUSA contest).

1.      Points will be awarded for each entry in local contests up to four entries.  (5 points per entry)

2.      Points for each winner in local competition up to two entries.

First place     = 10 points

Second place =  8 points

Third place    =  5 points

2.      Local Chapter Activities

a         The contestant participated in:

1.      Social Activities, Employer-Employee Functions, Installation of Officers, Safety Program, Awards Banquet, Parent Recognition Function, Industry Recognition Banquet or Reception, Television or Radio Program (maximum of 5 activities--five points will be awarded for each activity.)

2.      Documentation of contestant’s involvement in local chapter activities must be provided in the form of photographs, certificates, newspaper articles listing student’s name, program, etc.

d.     Citizenship (0-30)

1.      The 30 point maximum is based on the following criteria:

a.       School Project - Documentation of student’s participation in a major project that will have significant impact on the total student body.  (Example:  Career Fair, Assembly Program, Talk/Presentation, Parent Visitation, etc.)  A written description and photographs of three activities should be included.  (5 points for each activity)

b.      Community Service - Documentation of contestant’s involvement in three community service projects must be included.  (Example:  Blood Drive, Clean-up or Paint Campaign, Needy Family, Adopt A Grandparent, etc.)  A written description and photographs of the activities should be included.  (5 points for each activity)

c.       Career/Technical Education Standing (0-40)

1.      The 40 point maximum is based on the contestant’s performance in his/her career/technical education subject.

a.       Submit career/technical education class grades for the first and second semesters/terms of the previous year and the first semester/term of current year.  Attach to entry blank.  (Maximum of two grades will be judged.)

A = 20 points                  C =   5 points

B = 10 points                  D =   0 points

b.      If contestant is a coop student, average combined employer’s grade and related study grade to produce one grade for the semester/term.

 

 

f.       Professional Development Program (0-50)

1.      10 points will be awarded for each level of the PDP completed.  (Completed PDP books must be submitted as a part of the notebook.)

g.      Interview (0-100)

1.      The contestant will participate in an interview component with an interview committee (judges).  Students will have an opportunity to explain how they approached various activities and what benefits were derived from the project.  The interview will also be used to help verify points awarded by the judges and to answer any questions they may have.

a.       The interview with the committee will be limited to seven minutes.

b.      All contestants will be asked identical questions.  Such questions might include the following but will be determined by the judges:

1.      Briefly tell about yourself, your school activities, training area, and your family.

2.      What are your career goals?

3.      What is the greatest benefit you have received from your membership in SkillsUSA?

4.      What local SkillsUSA chapter activities have you participated in this year and what are the benefits?

5.      Discuss some of the fundamental principles of American democracy.

6.      Current events.

7.      Trends affecting career/technical education.
