Skills USA Welding Contest
On Thursday, Nov. 26, 2007 the state welding contest committee met at Shelby County Career Center to discuss plans for the district and state contest.
For secondary programs, the district contest will be on Feb. 29th. Instructors need to look at the list of the districts and the locations to determine where you will be competiting for this contest. This has not changed from last year. You will be given a blueprint to help you prepare your students for the competition. Each contestant must bring there own plates for this contest, a bill of materials is on the blueprint. Also, a written test will be given at district this year, and to help prepare the contestants for this, a copy of the test with the answers will be available on the www.skillsalabama.org web site. The top five from each district will compete at the state contest. A contestant cannot compete at the state level without having competed in the district contest. If for some reason one of the top five cannot go to state, then the sixth place will go and etc. Instructors, it is very important that you make contact with your district chairman to let him know how many contestants you are planning to enter in the contest.
The State contest will be held on April 29 & 30, 2008. The hands on part of the contest will be on the April 29, 2006 at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville for secondary contest and Gadsden State Community College for post secondary contest. The written test will be given at the BJCC at 8:00 am on April 30, 2008. As soon as I find out the location of the testing site at the BJCC I’ll let you know.
District chairman will be taking care of the prizes for the secondary winners. These guys can use all the help they can get so we need everyone out there begging for prizes, if you can help us out with this please contact your district chairman. Folks remember the more donations we get the better it is for our students. We still need a committee for the post secondary prizes. If you are with a post secondary program and would like to serve on the prize committee let me know.
We will showcase the top 10 test plates at the civic center on April 30, 2008. Also, there will be a booth set up for any of our sponsors that would like to set up an exhibit.
We are planning on giving all contestants and instructors a T-shirt and any other goodies that we can come up with as well as feed them on the day of the hands on contest. In order for us to do this we need money in the account. If you have a business or industry that you work closely with ask them for a donation. All checks can be made out to Brewer High School; I have an account set up at my school for the state contest. Anyone who makes a donation, we will put their
I look forward to working with you this year in making this the best Skills USA Welding Contest ever.
